Watch out below! Every two years in Tarragona, Spain, teams from around the world compete to build the highest human tower, known as a “castell.” The daring feat is part of a tradition that dates back to the 18th century.
Building a human tower takes a lot of planning, says Mario Jiménez, a member of a castell team from Tarragona. The hundreds of men, women, and children on each team must arrange themselves carefully. Adult team members form the base of the tower. Then lighter people—usually kids—scramble to the top. Well-built castells can be more than 10 levels high!
