Vroom, vroom! A new car-racing series, called Roborace, will kick off next fall at racetracks around the world. But there’s something curious about these cars: They have no drivers!
Each Roborace car has cameras and sensors that detect what’s around it. Computers use this data to steer the vehicle.
Teams of engineers will compete to design the best Roborace car. All of them will use the same sleek electric car body. But they’ll each build their own sensors and computer programs that guide the cars around tracks while avoiding obstacles. Organizers hope that the series will jump-start improvements in self-driving car technology.
