Do you notice something odd about the giant fish above? It’s made entirely out of trash! The sculpture is the work of an organization called Washed Ashore.

Volunteers for the group collect plastic litter from beaches along the west coast of the U.S., like toothbrushes, water bottles, and buckets. Then they work with artists to build sculptures of sea animals in zoos and parks around the country.

Washed Ashore hopes the sculptures draw attention to the problem of ocean pollution. Thousands of animals die each year because they mistake plastic trash for food or get entangled in it. “We hope to inspire people to make change,” says John Tannous, who helps run Washed Ashore.
