A bird does a split. Penguins bodysurf the waves. Ground squirrels toss each other in the air. These creatures’ silly antics were all caught on camera! Then photographers entered the pictures in the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards 2021. This annual contest celebrates hilarious snapshots of wildlife from around the world.

“Time for School”
A smooth-coated otter teaches its baby how to swim in Singapore.

Showcasing these funny moments can make animals more relatable and encourage people to protect wildlife, says Tom Sullam. He’s one of the competition’s organizers. The contest sells products featuring the winning photos and donates money to a different environmental organization each year.

“Happy”
Gentoo penguins enjoy surfing the waves in the Falkland Islands, east of Argentina.

Sullam’s favorite photo took first prize in 2016. It shows a fox diving headfirst into a snowbank. “This fox is actually hunting a rodent under the snow,” says Sullam. “But humans just see a fox doing a face-plant. It’s laugh-out-loud funny.”
